Understanding Discharges of Army Enlisted Personnel

There are two parts when referring to discharges of Enlisted Army Personnel:

  1. The Army Regulation and Chapter that contains the details of the discharge (aka. Separation Authority).
  2. Narrative Reason for Separation (aka. Chapter Title).

Army personnel refer to a discharge by it’s Chapter number rather than the title.

For example, a “Chapter 4” discharge applies to Enlisted Army personnel in grades E-1 through E-9 or in ranks Private to Sergeant Major of the Army.

The Separation Authority is Army Regulation 635-200 Active Duty Enlisted Administrative Separations, Chapter 4.

The Narrative Reason for Separation is: Separation for Expiration of Service Obligation.

So a “Chapter 4” means a solider was Separated for Expiration of Service Obligation.
