SUBJECT: ARMY DIRECTIVE 2012-20 (PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEIGHT AND WEIGHT
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION)
1. SOLDIERS ENROLLED IN PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION SCHOOLS AND COURSES WILL
NO LONGER CONTINUE INSTITUTIONAL TRAINING OR REMAIN IN THE COURSE IF THEY CANNOT
MEET PHYSICAL FITNESS AND/OR HEIGHT AND WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS. THIS CHANGE
STRENGTHENS THE ARMY PROFESSION AND DEMONSTRATES THE ARMY’S COMMITMENT TO
ITS IDEALS, TRADITIONS, AND THE WARRIOR ETHOS. THIS REVISION OF STANDARDS IS THE
DIRECT RESULT OF CAPTURING AND IMPLEMENTING LESSONS LEARNED OVER A DECADE OF
WAR, AND IS INTEGRAL TO REFINING OUR DOCTRINE, TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND LEADER
DEVELOPMENT TO SHAPE THE FUTURE FORCE. AS PART OF THIS EFFORT, THE ARMY WILL
REVIEW ALL STANDARDS, ELIMINATE THOSE STANDARDS WHICH HAVE BECOME OBSOLETE,
AND RE-ALIGN THE FORCE WITH THE REVISED STANDARDS.
2. THIS POLICY CHANGE IS EFFECTIVE FOR PME COURSES STARTING ON OR AFTER 1 NOVEMBER
2012 INSTRUCTED IN RESIDENT OR BY A MOBILE TRAINING TEAM (MTT). THE POLICY APPLIES
TO; SENIOR SERVICE COLLEGE, SERGEANTS MAJOR ACADEMY, JOINT SPECIAL OPERATION
FORCES SENIOR ENLISTED ACADEMY, CAPTAINS CAREER COURSE, INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
EDUCATION, WARRANT OFFICER ADVANCE COURSE, WARRANT OFFICER STAFF COURSE,
WARRANT OFFICER SENIOR STAFF COURSE, ADVANCED LEADERS COURSE, SENIOR LEADERS
COURSE, AND WARRIOR LEADER COURSE.
3. SOLDIERS ATTENDING THE IDENTIFIED PME SCHOOLS AND COURSES WILL BE ADMINISTERED
AN INITIAL APFT AND HEIGHT AND WEIGHT SCREENING. ONE APFT RETEST AND/OR HEIGHT
AND WEIGHT SCREENING IS ALLOWED AND WILL BE ADMINISTERED NO EARLIER THAN 7 AND
NO LATER THAN 24 DAYS AFTER INITIAL FAILURE OF THE APFT AND/OR HEIGHT/WEIGHT
SCREENING.
4. SOLDIERS WHO SUBSEQUENTLY FAIL TO MEET PHYSICAL FITNESS AND/OR HEIGHT AND
WEIGHT STANDARDS WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE COURSE AND THE DA FORM 1059 (SERVICE
SCHOOL ACADEMIC EVALUATION REPORT) WILL BE ANNOTATED IN BLOCK 11D “FAILED TO
ACHIEVE COURSE STANDARDS.”
5. MORE SPECIFIC INFORMATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS REGARDING THE
POLICY CHANGE ARE IN ARMY DIRECTIVE 2012-20 (PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEIGHT AND
WEIGHT REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL MILITARY EDUCATION), WHICH CAN BE FOUND

6. THIS MESSAGE WILL BE CITED AS AUTHORITY TO UPDATE ALL APPLICABLE ARMY
REGULATIONS, DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY PAMPHLETS AND ANY OTHER MILITARY OR
COMMAND PUBLICATIONS/SYSTEMS, TO REFLECT THIS CHANGE IN POLICY DURING FUTURE
REVISIONS. ALARACT 067/ 2012 – ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING (APFT) REQUIREMENTS FOR
MILITARY INSTITUTIONAL TRAINING IS RESCINDED AS OF 31 OCT 12.
